Clichés. I’ve heard my share of phrases describing the construction market here in the South:

  • The new norm
  • Worst market since the depression
  • Deep recession
  • A time of retrenchment
  • An opportunity
  • Current economic climate
  • Etc., etc.

Rule Number 1: The Customer is King!
Category: Industry News — August 11, 2010

Rule number one: The Customer is the King! He pays your salary, sends your kids to college and pays for your retirement. You can never get frustrated or be angry with the King!  So, why is it that so many people on both sides of bidding transaction are unhappy? It could be communication (or lack thereof) it could be that each of you sees the relationship differently or simply perceived value is just not there among several possibilities. I tend to believe that what people think about you and your company is a little bit like most aircraft accidents, i.e. it’s a string of little things strung together, resulting in a crash. Remove any one of these little issues and abracadabra, the chain is broken and the crash never takes place. It is that way with relationships, except in reverse. Leave out a single necessary step and the relationship never ripens or if it was good, rot sets in. WE need a better way to bid!

What do you think is the most important factor in making your site a financial success?

If you guessed that the answer is getting more people to your site, you’d have lots of company. The conventional wisdom is that you put up a web site and then try to get a top search engine listing or use your advertising campaign to bring in visitors. The number of visitors you bring in should determine the amount of money you make.

Who’s Watching the Store

One of the fundamental changes we’ve seen with many companies operating in the “New Reality” of today’s economy is companies doing more with less people. If you survived the cuts, your reward is frequently more work, longer hours and maybe even lower pay. Baby, it’s a tough world out there! Any you’re one of the lucky ones. Some managers today are doing things that they used to farm out to others. An individual’s span of control is ultimately limited by the fact that the human brain can actually only do one thing at a time, regardless of what all those multi-tasking gurus tell you.

We have the Best Research in the Industry …. but how?

You always hear about how companies are the best at what they do.  BidAlert.com has the best research team in the industry – and let me tell you why.  My name is Nancy Ray and I am the Chief Editor and Researcher with BidAlert.com.  I wanted to take a quick moment to outline and detail some of the reasons BidAlert.com’s research team is successful and where we have the edge against our competitors.

Researching for actionable, private projects that everyone else doesn’t already know about, is more difficult today than in past years.  Owners, Developers, Architects and Engineers are much more “secretive” about, and protective of their projects today and certainly less willing to discuss these projects. What is the greatest challenge to your business?  Is it finding quality employees?  Maybe it’s legal issues?  As a construction company, it’s probably not either of those.  You need good, quality projects and timely leads to pursue. Like a moth drawn to a flame, opportunity beckons many people in the same manner.  Believing that opportunity lies in the exploitation of each wonderful new idea, businesses loose sight of the fundamental disciplines that made them successful.  In pursuing opportunities what appears inviting and unique rarely is what it seems!
